In one of Britain’s oldest and most established cheese shows which dates back some 151 years in the agricultural village of Frome, Sirana Gligora’s already distinguished Paški Sir has once again been bestowed with Gold.
The quintessential Global Cheese Awards opened it’s doors to international cheeses just last year and for many of the organisers and judges alike, this was their first opportunity to taste Croatia’s finest cheeses. More than 1,200 cheeses were entered this year and a crown of over 20,000 gathered to witness the judging.
Sirana Gligora were presented with 5 medals for 3 different cheeses but it was the results of the ‘Best Overseas Cheese From non EU Counties’ category that grabbed the headlines.
Big names and key figures in the dairy industry voted Paški Sir as the overall winner in the ‘Best None EU Continental Cheese’ category with a Gold Medal, and Gligora’s excellent mixed cow and sheep milk cheese Žigljen came in with a Silver, meaning Gligora are producing the best two cheeses outside the EU market.
Gliogra’s Paški Sir also picked up a further 2 Bronze Medals in the ‘Single Specialty Cheese’ category and the ‘Best Continental Hard Cheese Category’. Rounding up another great day for Croatian cheese and gastronomy and making its first competitive appearance, Gligora’s new cheese Dinarski which is a creamy and complex mix of goat and cow milk, won a Silver medal in the ‘Best Mixed Milk Cheese’ category.
Nigel Pooley, Chairman of the Global Cheese Awards Committee said “The quality of
the entries this year has been outstanding. The marking of some categories has really
challenged our judges, which include national food critics as well as specialists from
inside the cheese industry”.
