Sirana Gligora on the Island of Pag is celebrating the news that its Žigljen has wowed judges in Great Taste 2013 by being awarded a 3 Star Gold Medal in the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards scheme involving over 400 judges and thousands of hours of blind tasting.
Great Taste is simply about taste, not clever branding or smart packaging. Judges were presented with Sirana Gligora’s Žigljen, Dinarski sir, Paški sir and Kolan, with no labels or marks – and they taste, confer and re-taste before making the decision on whether a product should be a 1-, 2- or 3-star winner. In total more than 12 judges independently tasted each cheese before commented on each product.
Managing Director Šime Gligora said “Winning yet another top mark for our cheese is an honour for all at Sirana Gligora who accept this recognition for all the hard work and dedication that goes into maintaining such high standards. This is the second year that we have entered and we are pleased to offer free tastings of all our winning cheeses in our Gligora Cheese Shops across Croatia, where we bring the taste of Pag to your environment “.
Out of almost 10,000 products entered into Great Taste 2013 just 125 have been awarded 3-star. Gligora’s 3-star Žigljen will be re-judged by a panel including Masterchef judge and restaurant critic Charles Champion, food buyers from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Whole Food Markets and Michelin Star chef Russell Brown who will together decided on the 2013 Top 50 Foods, the Golden Fork Trophy winners as well as the new 2013 Supreme Champion.
Judges commented on Gligora’s cheeses;
Žigljen A gorgeous cheese with full and deep in flavour. The Alpine milk shines through with the sheep milk in the background, a wonderful robust balance of flavours. Žigljen has a superb creamy texture with a slight crunchiness and a complex finish that goes on and on, utterly superb.
Dinarski A Fabulous presentation, beautiful and rustic appearance and a nice creamy texture. A very skilfully cleaver blend of milks produce an outstanding depth of flavour with a nice rounded balance and sharp grassy sweetness that lingers on the palate.
Paški sir A very good hand made sheep milk cheese with a beautiful appearance. This Paški sir packs an intense complex flavour with mellow undertones, an excellent nuttiness and rounded mature finish. This cheese would make an excellent alternative to Parmesan.
Kolan An excellent cow milk cheese with a very attractive appearance. A beautiful texture that melts in the mouth and delivers a smooth creamy taste with long flavours and finish.
